A project using leftover materials from a weaving factory in Nishiwaki City!

In the brand name LOOM&SPOOL, "loom" refers to weaving and "spool" refers to thread reel.

This time, I wove some interesting fabric from leftover spools of thread, and made some interesting slippers.

Trial and error on waffle size:

My first encounter with it was a huge roll of warp threads called a beam that was lying around in a warehouse. The warp threads are usually wound up all at once, so in small-lot production, the options are generally white, ecru, or black, and the color and pattern are often expressed with the weft thread.

So I was delighted when I discovered a leftover warp beam in LOOM&SPOOL's brand color, grey!

You can make it plain!!

The miracle of colored warp threads. It's impossible to achieve this in small batches. That's how rare it is (for me!).

I had been thinking about making 100% cotton waffles for a long time, so I got to work on making them with great enthusiasm.

We asked them to make prototypes of waffles of various sizes, from A to F, to see which size would be appropriate for making slippers. The three-dimensional volume creates a visually pleasing feeling. Taking into consideration the risk of rubbing against the feet, we decided on a size "D" to ensure a good balance and avoid any snagging caused by being too big.

Next is the issue of finishing.

I wanted to make a waffle that was thicker than usual. I reduced the width from 110cm to 80cm.

USE UNUSED

Nishiwaki City is a city famous for Banshu weaving. Okaji Orimono, a company I came across at a market event, has a mountain of treasures in its warehouse!

Thread, thread, thread, thread

Thread left over from the previous generation!

Remains of used thread.

I might use it someday. I wonder when I'll use it? I'll use it at LOOM&SPOOL!
It was the perfect material for the USE UNUSED PROJECT.

PRODUCTION

The distinctive voluminous shape of these waffle slippers, with three straps combined together, was actually something I had in mind using scraps of a Wool Newmeyer blanket.

The shape of the foot is the same as that of the proven TKJ slippers and JCO front-opening slippers. It is cut using a traditional mold.

We made small adjustments to the tip of the shoe many times to prevent the toes from pointing forward when wearing it. The result is a shape that gives a relaxed feel that makes you want to wear it in a hotel, etc.
